Apply for Business Manager visa

If you are a foreign national and your resident status is not of having a Japanese spouse, long-term/permanent resident, or having a spouse of permanent resident, you need to apply for Business Manager visa to manage a company.

In order to acquire Business Manger visa, one needs to meet the following conditions.

 

Invest into business

  1. Establish a company with the capital of ¥5 million or more
  2. Set up an office
    Virtual office does not meet the requirement for applying Business Manager visa. The office should be physical and dedicated space with the nameplate of company. Home office is acceptable when fulfilling other conditions.
  3. Prepare necessary documents for business plan, etc.
    They need to be filed to the Immigration Bureau.

 

Become an officer (at Japanese or foreign company) without investing

  1. Employed to manage a company as an officer
  2. Have 3 years of experience or more in business management or administration
  3. Become an officer at a company with a certain scale
  4. Prepare necessary documents for business plan, etc.

After establishing a company, the following documents need to be filed to tax office and metropolitan tax office (prefectural tax office and city hall).

Tax office

  • Notification of Corporation Establishment
  • Application Form for Approval of Filing Blue Return*
  • Application for Special Provision for Extension of the Due Date for Filing a Final Return Form
  • Notification of Establishment/Relocation/Closure of a Salary-Paying Office
  • Application for Approval Made in Relation to the Special Provision for Due Dates for Withholding Income Tax

* When filing the Application Form for Approval of Filing Blue Return, you can receive tax breaks. We encourage your timely submission since it needs to be filed within 3 months after the establishment.

 

Metropolitan tax office (prefectural tax office and city hall)

  • Notification of Corporation Establishment
  • Application for Special Provision for Extension of the Due Date for Filing a Final Return Form

File Social Insurance and Labor Insurance Related Documents

In hiring employees including directors, you need to have them enrolled in the social insurance and labor insurance outlined below.

We can look into your situation, and apply necessary insurance on your behalf.

Types of social insurance and labor insurance

  1. Employees’ health insurance
  2. Employees’ pension insurance *1&2 are social insurances.
  3. Unemployment insurance
  4. Labor accident insurance *3&4 are labor insurances.

1.Employees’ health insurance

Having insured, the medical expense becomes 30% at hospitals. When one enters a new company, the health insurance has to be switched to that of new company.

Eligibility

Officer, full-time/contract/part-time employees and temporary worker
*Part-time and temporary worker who work hours approximately three fourth or more of those for full-time employees (30 hours a week), are required to join the employees’ health insurance and pension insurance.

Cost burden

Employees and company share the cost by 50% each.

Employee’s burden: about 4.95% of salary

Company’s burden: about 4.95% of salary

 

2.Employees’ pension insurance

This is the pension for those employed by a company.
The pension will be added to the basic pension in the future.

 

*A foreign national who resides in Japan temporarily, is also obliged to have the insurance. For those who do not possess Japanese citizenship, lose the insured status and leave Japan, they can demand the lump-sum withdrawal payment within 2 years after losing domicile in Japan.

Eligibility

Officer, full-time/contract/part-time employees and temporary worker

*Part-time and temporary workers who work hours approximately three fourth or more of those for full-time employees (30 hours a week), are obliged to join the employees’ health insurance and pension insurance.

Cost burden

Employees and company share the cost by 50% each.

Employee’s burden: about 9.15% of salary

Company’s burden: about 9.15% of salary

 

3.Unemployment insurance

If you lose your job, but have had unemployment insurance for 1 year or more, you can receive unemployment benefit until you find a new employment.

Eligibility

Employees (part-time and temporary workers are included) who have 20 agreed hours per week or more and are expected to work for 31 days or more.

*Directors are not eligible.

Cost burden

Employee’s burden: about 0.3% of salary

Company’s burden: about 0.6% of salary (excluding agriculture, forestry, fisheries and construction)

 

4.Labor accident insurance

In the case where an employee suffers injury or illness, remains physically disabled, or dies, due to accidents occurring at work or while commuting, compensation is paid to the employee or the family.

Eligibility

All full-time/contract/part-time employees and temporary workers regardless of their working hours.

*Directors are not eligible.

Cost burden

Company bears the entire burden.

It is usually less than 0.5%, but differs by industry.

Apply for Approval and License

Just establishing a company does not ensure the start of business. Particular industries require you to obtain an approval beforehand.

For example, you need to apply for a license of used goods merchant required for trading used goods, or food business license required for running a restaurant.
